How To Care For Hearing Aids

Hearing aids are worn daily on our bodies, causing them to be exposed to bodily oils, environment debris, and moisture all day long. These are electronic devices that are exposed to moisture and earwax in the ear canal, sweat, skin oils, environmental dust and moisture. Therefore, they will need to be cleaned regularly. The procedure for cleaning your hearing aids depends on the style of the hearing aid.

  1. Make sure the hearing aid has power.

It may seem obvious but the first thing to check with any hearing aid is that it has a functional battery or has been charged if it is a rechargeable hearing aid. This can be done a couple ways:

  1. Cup hearing aid in hand and listen for whistling (feedback).

  2. Use battery tester (cannot be done with rechargeable hearing aid).

2. Change Filter/Wax Guard (if applicable)

Many hearing aids come with wax filters/guards to prevent wax from getting inside the hearing aid. If your hearing aid suddenly stops working or seems to work first thing in the morning and stops working after wearing the hearing aid for a little while, it could be the filter is clogged. Before the filter clogs completely you may notice you’re not hearing as clearly as usual.

3. Change the Dome (if applicable)

If your hearing aid has a dome on the speaker then it needs to be changed any time you change the filter. If you do not change the dome after changing the filter there may be wax stuck inside the dome that can clog the new filter. Anytime you take your hearing aids out of your ears check the dome and wipe off any debris you see.
